Holy Thursday Foot-Washing

During this Lenten Season, the Interfaith Center for Worker Justice will gather together on Holy Thursday, March 24, at 11:30 a.m. at 750 B Street to lift up the plight of janitors in San Diego as they carry the cross of their sacrifice to Civic Center Plaza.

We invite you to participate in this deeply meaningful event.  We are moved and honored that Bishop Robert McElroy will participate in the foot washing rituals, to be held at noon at Civic Center Plaza (202 C St., San Diego, 92101; free parking will be available at Horton Plaza with validation). He inspires us to greater compassion and love during this holy season.

San Diego janitors, the majority of whom are immigrant women, struggle daily to make ends meet on poverty wages.  They are most likely to suffer from wage theft and hazardous working conditions, and they are vulnerable to abuses on the job, including widespread sexual harassment, assault, and rape.

As you know, Holy Thursday’s Foot Washing ritual is a gesture of hospitality, service, and compassion – a very different vision from what our janitors often experience in their workplaces.  We hope that you will join us in bringing these egregious conditions to light by calling on management to do what is right and just.
