Light and Life

Ultrasound is an instrument of light and life: transforming sound into image, it sheds light on the life growing within a woman. And the Light and Life Foundation has a goal to help bring seven mobile ultrasound facilities to 70 cities to shed more light and help nurture life.

“There’s nobody that’s doing this the way we are,” says Gregory Anthony, a Knight of Columbus who co-founded the organization with brother Knight Steve Beuerle.

“This is the answer.”

The foundation’s work is in cooperation with the California Knights of Columbus State Council Mobile Ultrasound Program. Since 2009,  California Knights of Columbus have donated 29 machines to pregnancy resource centers throughout the state, an important part of the Knights of Columbus national initiative that was launched that year. The Supreme Council provides matching funds for local and state councils that raise funds for the purchase of ultrasound machines. As of June 2014, this national initiative has been responsible for the purchase of more than 460 ultrasound machines costing more than $13.5 million.

The Light and Life Foundation operates on a similar funding principle, except rather than partnering with a Knights of Columbus council for fund-raising, the foundation partners with the pregnancy resource center itself.

The organization got its start in the Diocese of San Diego, where Anthony and Beuerle live. The program there is intended to be a model for Knights of Columbus chapters in 70 cities.

The foundation works with different producers to provide three different mobile units. The least expensive costs a minimum of $120,000, and the most expensive costs about $250,000.

“We’re going out into the culture, not just sitting back and waiting,” says Anthony.

“This will be transformative for the culture.”
