Mental Health Ministry Network Training

The initial training of the San Diego Diocesan Mental Health Ministry Network (MHMN) took place June 20.

Nineteen parishes (see complete listing below) were represented at the day-long workshop, at which more than 160 volunteers were trained.

The training, provided by Sandy Heinisch, director of grief counseling for the Diocese of Oakland, included topics such as: polishing listening skills, developing empathy, maintaining confidentiality, and handling crisis.

A panel that included Piedad Garcia, EdD. LCSW, Assistant Deputy Director, County of San Diego Behavioral Health; Steven Jella, Psy.D., Associate Executive Director of San Diego Youth Services; and Markov Manalo, National Alliance on Mental Illness, San Diego Chapter Board Member, entertained questions on the various services in San Diego County available to those experiencing mental health challenges.  About a dozen mental health service organizations also exhibited at the event.

Parishes participating in the SDDMHMN include: St. Therese, San Diego, San Raphael, Nativity, Sacred Heart, Coronado, St. Jude,  Our Lady of Mount Carmel, San Diego, St. Gregory, Mission San Diego, Holy Spirit, St. Patrick, Carlsbad, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Lakeside, St. Thomas More, The Immaculata, St. Elizabeth Seton, St. James, Mission San Luis Rey, St. Brigid, Our Lady of Refuge, and St. Mary Star of the Sea, Oceanside.

The Office for Social Ministry is equipped to bring additional parishes into the SDDMHMN as parishes elect to participate.  For information contact Maria Valencia at 858-490-8323.
